Next Step Savings Program

Addressing Poverty Through Financial Literacy

One key area consistently addressed by More Than A Roof Housing is poverty and solutions to help alleviate it.  In partnership with private donations , More Than A Roof Housing, with the help of Vancity and local volunteers, hosts the Next Step Program.  A select number of tenants within our communities are invited to participate in financial education workshops that coach them in the area of money management.  Participants take a comprehensive look at their finances - how they spend, how to budget, and how to save money.

Over the course of a year the participants gain valuable knowledge to help them manage their spending and save toward a life goal - everything from purchasing a computer to visiting family across the country.  After successful completion of the Money Skills course, More Than A Roof Housing then matches, dollar for dollar, the savings of each tenant up to a maximum amount annually.   Each participant walks away with the confidence to handle their own money more effectively and to experience the benefits of good financial management and planning.

Our 2011 Next Step Graduation celebrates 20 participants who have gained financial literacy skills and learned how to save money. Between their savings and dollar matching from Vancity and More Than A Roof Foundation, over $18,000 was saved. Congratulations to all our participants!
